Sod installation estimate software that prices sod per square foot and sends the quote
LandscapeEstimating is sod installation estimate software for contractors who need a margin-checked price per square foot and a quote the homeowner can sign the same day. Trace the new lawn on satellite imagery, then price sod with waste, starter fertilizer, laying labor, removal and disposal, overhead and target margin from your own cost library. Company and above start with a Sod install with soil prep assembly. Plans start at $129/mo per company.
The problem
Square footage is the easy part. Scope is where sod bids lose money.
Why a sod installation quote comes in low
Most sod jobs that lose money were measured roughly right. The loss comes from what the price left out.
A sod installation estimate that holds up starts with a measured area and a written scope, and then prices each piece of work against your own crew. That is the job this software does.
- The area was paced off or guessed from a phone photo, then rounded down to win the job.
- Old turf removal, a sod cutter rental and dump fees were folded into a flat price per square foot.
- Waste for cuts around beds, walks and curves was never added, so the crew ran a pallet short.
- Grading and topsoil were promised in a sentence but never priced in hours.
- Labor assumed pallets dropped beside the lawn, while the real job meant hauling rolls through a side gate.
How it works
From a US address to a signed sod quote.
How sod installation estimate software builds the quote
- Search the customer's US address and trace the area to be sodded on the Sod layer. Square feet update as you draw. You draw the boundary yourself; the estimator does not auto-detect lawn areas.
- Trace beds, pavers or edging on their own layers if the job includes them, so one quote covers the whole install.
- Price the Sod layer from your cost library. On Crew, the layer carries one installed sod cost per square foot and a production rate in sq ft per man-hour. Company and above add assemblies and waste factors.
- Add job charges for the things that are not square footage: sod cutter or skid steer rental, delivery, disposal of old turf. Each charge is priced once per job.
- Overhead goes on material plus labor, then the price is set from your target margin. You see cost, margin and price per line before anything goes to the customer.
- Send a branded proposal with the traced map. Company and above offer good, better and best options, for example sod only, sod with removal, and sod with removal and topsoil. The client signs online and you download the signed PDF.
Every Company account starts with a Sod install with soil prep assembly on the Sod layer. The editable starting numbers are sod at $0.68 per sq ft with 5% waste, starter fertilizer at 0.0002 bags per sq ft and $28 a bag, and 220 sq ft per man-hour. They are setup values to replace with your supplier prices and crew rates, not prices we vouch for.
Pricing sod per square foot
Cost first, then margin, then the per-foot number.
How much to charge for sod installation per square foot
Charge a per square foot price that covers sod with waste, prep and laying labor, removal and disposal, overhead and your target margin, then divide the job price by the sodded area. Do not start from a market rate. Start from your costs on this property.
US homeowner cost guides put a professional install with sod included at roughly $1.70 to $2.60 per square foot, and complex jobs with removal and regrading at $3 to $6 or more. Those ranges help you sanity-check a number. They do not tell you what your crew earns on a backyard with a 36 inch gate.
| Cost driver | How the estimate prices it |
|---|---|
| Sod material | Measured sq ft plus waste, times your farm price per sq ft |
| Waste | 5% to 10% for cuts around beds, walks and curves; more on narrow strips |
| Soil prep and laying | Measured sq ft divided by your production rate, times loaded labor cost |
| Old turf removal | A lower production rate on the assembly, or a separate removal line |
| Equipment | Sod cutter, tiller or skid steer as a job charge |
| Disposal | Dump fee or haul-off as a job charge |
| Starter fertilizer | Bags per sq ft inside the assembly |
| Overhead and margin | Overhead on material plus labor, then price = cost / (1 - target margin) |
Margin here is on price. Adding 25% to cost is a markup and gives a lower number than a 25% margin, which is a common reason sod bids look profitable on paper and are not.
Worked example
A 4,000 sq ft backyard priced from the traced area to the margin.
A sod installation estimate for a 4,000 sq ft backyard
This example uses the Company plan's starter assembly, a $58 loaded labor cost per man-hour, 12% overhead and a 25% target margin. The old lawn is cut out with a rented sod cutter and hauled away.
| Line | Quantity or calculation | Example amount |
|---|---|---|
| Traced Sod area | 4,000 sq ft | |
| Sod with waste | 4,000 x 1.05 = 4,200 sq ft at $0.68 | $2,856.00 |
| Starter fertilizer | 0.8 bags at $28 | $22.40 |
| Prep and laying labor | 4,000 / 220 sq ft per man-hour = 18.18 man-hours at $58 | $1,054.55 |
| Sod cutter rental | Job charge | $95.00 |
| Disposal of old turf | Job charge | $120.00 |
| Subtotal | Material, labor and charges | $4,147.95 |
| Overhead | 12% | $497.75 |
| Cost | Subtotal plus overhead | $4,645.70 |
| Price at 25% target margin | $4,645.70 / (1 - 0.25) | $6,194.27 |
| Margin | Price less cost | $1,548.57 |
That comes to about $1.55 per square foot installed. At 450 sq ft per pallet the order is about 9.3 pallets, so you would order 10; check your farm's pallet size, because it varies by grower and grass type. If the yard needs grading or topsoil, add it as its own line rather than slowing the laying rate, so the customer can see what they are paying for.
On the Crew plan the same job prices from the plain Sod layer: $0.68 per sq ft installed cost and 300 sq ft per man-hour, with the same two charges. That gives a price of $5,537.78 at the same overhead and margin. The gap is waste, fertilizer and a slower production rate that includes prep, which is why it pays to price sod from an assembly once you bid it every week. Use your own landscape production rates for both.
The scope checklist
Write down what the crew will finish, and what it will not.
What to include in a sod installation quote
A sod installation quote should name the grass type, the measured area and the work that happens before the first roll goes down.
Writing these into the proposal does two things. The crew knows the scope, and the customer can compare your quote with a lower one that left half of it out.
- Removal of the existing lawn: sod cutter, herbicide and wait time, or tilling in.
- Grading, and whether topsoil or compost is brought in and how many yards.
- Grass type and farm, since price and availability change by species and region.
- Delivery: pallet count, drop location and any carry through gates or up slopes.
- Waste allowance and who keeps the extra rolls.
- Starter fertilizer and the first rolling and watering.
- Irrigation checks or head adjustments, priced as their own line if included.
- Watering instructions and who is responsible after install, which is where most sod warranty disputes start.
- Your minimum charge, so a 600 sq ft strip still covers mobilization.
Who it's for
Contractors who sell sod as a job, not a favor.
Contractors who need a repeatable sod price
- Lawn care companies adding sod repairs and full lawn replacements to their route customers. Measure from the office, price from the same library you use for maintenance, and send the quote before the customer calls someone else.
- Design-build and landscape installers who lay sod next to new beds, patios and walls. Sod, Beds and Pavers sit on one estimate as separate layers; see paver estimating software for the hardscape side and mulch estimating software for the beds.
- Builders' landscape subcontractors bidding new construction lots, where the same lot sizes repeat and speed of quoting wins the work. Landscape bidding software covers the bid-to-signature workflow for those jobs.

Sod installation calculator, spreadsheet or estimating software
A sod installation calculator tells you how many square feet and pallets to order. It does not know your labor cost, your overhead or the margin you need, and it does not produce a quote.
| Tool | Measuring | Labor, overhead and margin | Quote and signature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sod calculator app or web page | Type in length and width | No | No |
| Spreadsheet | Type in an area you measured elsewhere | Yes, if someone keeps the formulas and costs current | Separate document and signing |
| LandscapeEstimating | Trace the lawn on satellite imagery of any US address | Your cost library, production rates, overhead and target margin | Branded proposal with the map, online signature, signed PDF |
Crew is $129/mo per company, or $64/mo billed yearly. Company is $299/mo, or $149/mo billed yearly, and adds assemblies, waste factors and good, better and best options. Operations is $649/mo, or $324/mo billed yearly. Enterprise is $1,298/mo. Compare what each plan includes on the pricing page.
FAQ
- How much to charge for sod installation?
Charge for sod installation from your costs on that property: sod with waste, prep and laying labor, removal and disposal, overhead, then your target margin. The worked example above comes to $6,194.27 for 4,000 sq ft, about $1.55 per square foot. Homeowner guides show roughly $1.70 to $2.60 per square foot with sod included.
- How much to charge for sod per square foot?
Divide the full job price by the sodded square feet. In the example, $6,194.27 over 4,000 sq ft is about $1.55 per square foot. Small jobs carry a higher per-foot price, because mobilization, equipment and disposal do not shrink with the area, so set a minimum charge rather than quoting the same rate on every lawn.
- How do you estimate a sod installation?
Measure the area, add waste for cuts, and price the sod at your farm cost. Then add prep and laying hours from your production rate, removal and disposal, and starter fertilizer. Apply overhead and price from target margin. Tracing the lawn on satellite imagery gives you the area before you drive out, and a site visit confirms grade, access and removal.
- How much sod waste should I add to an estimate?
Most contractors add 5% to 10% waste to the measured area. Use the low end on a large open rectangle and the high end on lawns with curved beds, narrow strips, many obstacles or slopes. The Company plan's starter assembly uses 5%, and you can change it per assembly to match how your crew cuts.
- How many square feet of sod can a crew lay in a day?
It depends on prep, access and crew size, so use your own job records. As a starting point, the Company assembly assumes 220 sq ft per man-hour including soil prep, which is about 3,500 sq ft for a two-person crew in an eight hour day. Long carries through gates and slopes cut that number.
- Is there software for sod installation estimates?
Yes. LandscapeEstimating traces the lawn on satellite imagery and prices the sod from your cost library, production rates, overhead and target margin. Company and above add sod assemblies with waste and material quantities. You send a branded proposal with the traced map, the client signs online and you download the signed PDF. Plans start at $129/mo.
